An Australian influencer named Brittany Hockley shared the eyewatering situation that occurred when she ordered a cup of coffee while travelling through Sydney Airport recently

Travelling is known to quickly get expensive, especially if you decide to do some shopping or enjoy a meal at the airport. This is because airports operate as a captive market with limited competition, which allows vendors to charge higher prices, even if it’s a chain you know and love.

Despite knowing this, it can be quite shocking when you get the bill back after ordering your food. This was the case for one woman, who decided to order herself a coffee while travelling from Sydney Airport recently. Taking to Instagram, Australian influencer and podcast host Brittany Hockley went on to share the ‘insane’ price she’d just paid for her cappuccino.

In the clip, the Life Uncut co-host sarcastically joked about her daily budget, which quickly racked up over one million views in just a few days.

“Super exciting, I’m going away for a long weekend in Australia, so let me show you how I spend $10 (£5.30) in a day,” she said at the start of the video, which saw her already at Sydney Airport, holding up two $5 bills.

The video then cut to her holding a takeaway coffee and showing the eye-watering receipt, which totalled $10.04 for a cappuccino with soy milk and honey, which had cost an extra $1 each, along with the $7.80 (£4.13) coffee.

A card transaction fee or a weekend surcharge of 14 cents pushed the final price over the $10 mark.

“The end,” Brittany then said before ending the video.

She then jokingly added in the caption of the post that she needs to watch her budget, writing: “Looks like I’m going to have to cut back on the honey.” She then went on to ask her 731,000 viewers what is the most they’ve ever paid for a cup of coffee.

“What the actual?!?!” one person wrote, clearly baffled by the steep price. Someone else wondered: “Did it at least taste good?”

Someone else went on to suggest that airport lounge passes might now be a more cost-effective option than eating and drinking in the general terminal area.

However, other viewers went on to share that this was a standard price for a takeaway coffee in other parts of the world, as they went on to share what they usually pay.

Another person went on to share the price they’d paid in the UK, as they shared: “I paid £9 for an iced latte with vanilla syrup in London, so equivalent to $18.”

“32AED (£6.50) which is about $12AUD for coffee here in the UAE pretty standard,” someone else shared, while another viewer claimed to have paid $15 USD (£11.19) for a Starbucks cappuccino in the U.S. that “wasn’t even fully filled”.

Safe to say she will be checking the price before ordering another coffee in the future.
