A cat came up with an inventive way to stay warm during the cold weather – and its owner couldn’t resist taking a video when they spotted where the pet ended up

Winter seems to have lasted for an eternity and it’s not just humans who are getting sick of it.

Our pets can also struggle in the cold weather – as shown by a cat that got creative during the chilliest months of the year.

Courtney Lichtenberger, from Kansas City in the US, took a video of how her furry friend is surviving in winter. Amusingly, the clever kitty has found a new spot in the home to rest and warm up.

The copywriter, 32, said: “My fiancé and I had just finished using the oven to make a pizza. My cat, Bear, somehow found that the stovetop was nice and warm from the oven being on and curled up right on top of it.

“It was a high of about 8F (-13°C) that day. Even though our house was set to 70F (21°C), there were areas in our house that were a little cooler than normal.”

Many cat owners could related to Courtney’s short video, which has garnered one million views, 235,000 likes and plenty of positive comments.

One viewer wrote: “I have multiple pictures of my cat lying on pizza boxes that had just been delivered. They just want warmth. No matter the weather.”

Another said: “Haha my kitten loves when the dishwasher is running to lay on the counter above it.”

Meanwhile, a third gushed: “Cats genuinely are the funniest things alive.” And a fourth added: “Mine loves to be in front of the hottest heat vent.”

Cats have a higher normal body temperature (about 38–39°C) than humans. For this reason, they seek out warmth to help maintain this temperature without expending extra energy.

What’s more, domestic cats are descended from wild cats that lived in hot, arid climates. Their instincts still drive them to seek out warm, cozy spots.

Warmth helps cats relax their muscles and joints, making them feel safe and comfortable. It also assists them to conserve energy they’d otherwise use to keep themselves warm.

Heat sources like radiators, laptops, or sunny spots often carry familiar household scents, making them even more appealing to our four-legged friends.

So the oven-top resting place does make a lot of sense!
