A woman who shared a throwback photo of herself with her boyfriend has had a wild realisation about the snap – and people have said the ‘camera knew’ before she did

Looking back on old photographs can bring back memories you thought you’d forgotten. You might find pictures of when you were a child that bring joy, pictures of loved ones you’ve lost that evoke bittersweet feelings, or even pictures of nights out with your friends that make you laugh.

But one woman on social media has said she recently came across a picture that made her jaw drop, as she spotted something she’d never noticed before – almost 30 years after it was taken. The picture, which was taken in 1998, shows Brenna Jennings sitting on the arm of a chair at a house party.

In the image, which Brenna posted on Threads, there is one man sitting in the chair next to her, and another man sitting by a window. She has her arm on the back of the chair close to the man sitting in it, but she is talking and laughing with the man sitting by the window.

And in the caption, Brenna revealed the shocking connection she had to both men. She wrote: “I was dating the guy in the chair, but I married the guy in the window.”

In a reply to her original post, Brenna went on to explain that the story behind her romance wasn’t as exciting as it sounded.

After graduating from college at around the age of 21, she was living in a rented flat with two male friends, one of whom would go on to become her husband.

During her time in that flat, she had two separate relationships before the lease on the property ended in 1998. Everyone moved out, going their separate ways. However, she kept in touch with her now-husband, and the pair began dating at the end of that year.

She explained: “The storytime isn’t that spicy. I shared this post-college apartment with my now-husband and another (male) friend. Entirely platonic. My introvert husband and I rarely even spoke.

“I dated 2 guys over that year. Lease ends May ’98, roommates scatter, Chair Guy and I break up in July. I’d kept in touch with my now-husband, and we started dating in December. The other roommate was our best man.”

Brenna and her husband, Steve De Trolio, have been together ever since, and the pair are now gearing up for the next big milestone together – watching their daughter go off to college herself.

Commenters on Brenna’s post were in awe at the romantic story behind the picture. Many joked that it was a sign not to let your boyfriend stop you from finding your husband.

Meanwhile, others said it looked like the “camera knew” Brenna and Steve were in love long before they did. And the pair definitely did look like they had a spark even back then!

One person said: “The way the guy in the window is looking at you says it all.” Another added: “The camera knew before you did.”

A third wrote: “Definition of never let your boyfriend keep you from meeting your husband.”
