NEED TO KNOW

  • A wife is upset that her husband is receiving messages from his female colleague outside of work
  • In a Mumsnet post, she recalled that the colleague gushed about how her husband “makes her day”
  • She said her husband downplayed the messages but later admitted that he and the woman routinely message each other

A wife is feeling uncomfortable after her husband’s female colleague sent him a message about how he makes her day.

In a post on the popular U.K. forum Mumsnet, the woman recalled that she was spending time with her husband one evening last week, when he received a message from his female coworker. It has been on her mind ever since.

She said her husband and this woman have worked together for two years and recently finished a presentation.

“She messaged to tell him it’s so fantastic working with him, she couldn’t imagine coming into the office every day if it wasn’t for him being there too, making her laugh and how he makes her day,” the wife said of her husband’s coworker, adding, “She said how much loves their chats and values and appreciates him.”

The wife said when she questioned her husband about the message, he “played it down,” but did “look a bit uncomfortable.”

She doesn’t feel a male colleague would send a similar kind of message, but doesn’t know if she’s being unreasonable. The woman will soon have to go face-to-face with her husband’s coworker.

“There’s a work social next weekend that we’re going to,” she said. “So I will meet her. Already feeling uncomfortable about seeing this woman.”

Responses to the post encouraged the woman to trust her gut feelings and questioned why his colleague was messaging him after work hours.

“You should be having a serious talk with him about his boundaries with this woman,” a commentator wrote.

Others felt that if the man did not address the “inappropriate” messages, he would be sending a message of his own.

“If he doesn’t shut this down immediately and in the right way then hes leaving himself open to major issues with her down the line and potentially jeopardising your trust in him at the same time so he’s either an idiot, or he’s enjoying the attention and wants to enjoy it further,” a commenter said.

In a follow-up post, the wife revealed that her husband said that the messages weren’t the first of their kind.

“They message often out of usual working hours I think and he’s told me they’re mates. Well past the colleague point now,” she wrote.

While some took her update to mean that there was more to their rapport, another felt it could still be completely platonic.

“Wait until you’ve met her before you decide. She might be the sort of woman that is gushing and OTT with everyone,” the poster said. “The important thing here is that your husband is open and honest with you about this friendship.”
