NASA has stepped in and debunked a conspiracy theory that suggests the Earth will lose gravity in August with the space agency using science to explain its reasoning

A chilling theory about the Earth losing gravity later this year has been officially debunked by NASA.

The theory claimed that on August 12 at 14:33GMT that the Earth would lose gravity for exactly seven seconds. The conspiracy theorists claimed this event was revealed in a NASA document under the name of ‘Project Anchor’ in November 2024.

Following this, they then took to social media to promote this theory. On Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter, people began discussing this suggestion which its proponents suggested would lead to “60 million deaths” from people falling to the ground.

One Instagram user, writing under the name of @mr_danya_of, claimed: “On August 12, 2026, the world will lose gravity for seven seconds. NASA knows. They’re preparing but won’t tell us why.”

This user claimed that up to 60 million people would die in a theory that has now been debunked. As the conspiracy theory gained traction, NASA stepped into explain why, through science, that this wouldn’t happen.

Speaking to fact checking website Snopes, they said that the only way for the Earth to lose gravity would be if the Earth’s mass were to change.

A spokesperson for the space agency explained: “The Earth will not lose gravity on August 12, 2026. Earth’s gravity, or total gravitational force, is determined by its mass.

“The only way for the Earth to lose gravity would be for the Earth system, the combined mass of its core, mantle, crust, ocean, terrestrial water, and atmosphere, to lose mass.”

This isn’t the first time grave predictions for 2026 have been predicted with people once again turning to Nostradamus for clues as to what this year has in store for the human race.

According to the New York Post, the famous philosopher didn’t actually predict anything specifically for this year, but this hasn’t stopped people from looking into it anyway.

Analysts of Nostradamus’ text say that according to the 26th verse of Century I that it says a “great man will be struck down in the day by a thunderbolt”.

This one line has led many to suggest that someone male and famous and important will be assassinated, or that a military coup may take over a political regime.

Meanwhile another section, this time quatrain VII, people say Nostradamus wrote: “Foists and galleys around seven ships, a mortal war will be let loose.”

Some commentators have suggested this could refer to the South China Sea and China’s exploits there, but nothing has been confirmed.
