Subway fans have been left gobsmacked after discovering how the fast-food chain prepares its baguettes each morning, and it’s making some rethink their next sandwich order

Subway fans have been left gobsmacked after seeing how their baguettes are prepared before the store opens to customers. At Subway, customers can customise their own sandwich – from choosing the bread to selecting the fillings and sauces that go into it.

This means diners can enjoy a different sandwich each time they visit while sticking to their personal taste preferences. However, after seeing how the chain prepares its baguettes in the morning, some customers have admitted they are thinking twice about ordering another sandwich. In a TikTok video shared by @soobway_2.0, a Subway worker is seen unboxing frozen baguettes and placing them into a purpose-made mould ready for baking.

The caption reads: “Is that how you thought they were made?”

While some Subway fans said the process is common across fast-food chains, others were shocked, admitting they had assumed the bread was made from scratch each morning.

One user commented: “Wait I thought that was hotdogs.”

Another added: “So it’s not made fresh!”

A third said: “How come there is nothing actually freshly prepared in restaurants any longer?”

One more person wrote: “My life is a lie.”

Another user joked: “Did people actually think they were kneading the dough in the back?!?”

A final commenter added: “So it comes frozen and they just cook it… Suddenly Subway is no longer worth anything to me. To think they even ask for tips now.”

Meanwhile, another worker claimed this technique is no longer used at their store, writing: “We no longer do it like that anymore.”

A statement from Subway reads: “Subway serves freshly made sandwiches at a great value to millions of guests around the world every day.

“Restaurants are owned and operated by a network of thousands of dedicated Subway franchisees who are passionate about consistently delivering a high-quality, convenient guest experience and contributing positively to their local communities.”

In 2021, the company launched Eat Fresh Refresh, aiming to “improve across every aspect of the business from menu updates to digital and guest experience”.

At the end of last year, Subway permanently added jacket potatoes to its UK menu following a “mash-hit” trial.

The decision came after a survey of 2,000 adults revealed Brits will consume more than 8,000 baked potatoes during their lifetime, with a quarter admitting they would eat one every day if possible.

Cheese and beans emerged as the most popular topping (56 per cent), followed by tuna mayonnaise (36 per cent) and bacon (23 per cent).

Cathy Goodwin, interim director of culinary and innovation for Subway EMEA, said: “The nation’s love of jacket potatoes is unparalleled.

“The enthusiasm we’ve seen on social media and the strong demand from our guests throughout the trial made it clear that Spudway deserved a permanent place on our menu.”
