Species With The Most Amount Of Villagers In Animal Crossing

Summary

  • Animal Crossing features 35 species of villagers who can move into your town.
  • Some species have a larger number of villagers than others.
  • Bear cubs and frogs are among the species with the largest number of villagers.

Animal Crossing is one of the coziest series in gaming, and one of the main reasons it stands out in the overcrowded genre is that it allows you to befriend anthropomorphic villagers with unique personalities. Once you start your game, you’ll begin meeting a bunch of animals who all want to become your neighbor, and eventually, your friend.

There are 35 different species in the series, but some have more villagers than others, making them much more common to run into. Whether you’re a fan of these animals or not, you’re bound to meet a few of them along the way as you search for the perfect candidates to join your community, because there are just so many of them.

We are including every villager for each species, including the ones that never made it outside of Japan and the few that have been removed from the series entirely.

Bear Cub

Not to be confused with the standard bear species, bear cubs are much smaller and are often more childlike than their fully-grown brethren. Bear Cubs have been a staple for Animal Crossing since the original game, and the number of villagers has only grown larger with every sequel and spin-off due to the popularity of the species.

One of the things that makes bear cubs so appealing is that they are the only species based on a younger form of animal in the entire series. Villagers like Stitches, Maple, and Judy are sought after for their unique designs, but also because they look at the world through an innocent pair of eyes that makes them incredibly appealing.

Dog

If it’s your dream to live in a town full of bipedal canines who drink coffee and take part in local fishing events, Animal Crossing can turn that fantasy into a reality. Dogs are one of the most common animals in the real world, so it shouldn’t be too surprising that they are one of the species with the most villagers.

With 20 different dog villagers to choose from, each with distinct fur patterns and attitudes, choosing one to move into your town can be harder than expected. Not only are there a ton of dog villagers to meet and greet, but the species also has a surprising number of special characters, such as Isabelle and K.K. Slider, who will always be around.

Frog

Frog villagers have been around since the original Animal Crossing, and despite not being as objectively cute as dogs or bear cubs, continue to have just as many neighborly villagers as those species. We try not to question the distinction between the frogs you can fish for and donate to Blathers at the museum and the ones that can move into your town.

It’s always fun to have at least one frog running around your village, especially on rainy days when everyone else seems to be negatively impacted by the weather. Frogs are the only species that refuse to use umbrellas, and can often be found running around in the rain with a smile on their face while everyone else stays inside where it’s nice and dry.

Mouse

If you’ve ever had a neighbor who you thought was as quiet as a mouse, you can probably see the appeal of having a few actual mice as members of your community. Like frogs, mouse villagers are much smaller than others and would be hard to find roaming outside if it weren’t for their massive ears and high energy.

A majority of mouse villagers are female with a peppy personality, which means they are constantly excited and always looking for new things to do. While most people try to stay away from areas populated with mice, the villagers you meet in Animal Crossing are all so charming that you’ll struggle to choose which one to have as a mainstay.

Bird

No matter where you live in the world, some kind of bird is likely nearby. There are so many different variations and types of birds that it makes sense for them to be one of the most-represented species in Animal Crossing, even though it is kind of hard to imagine a place where birds walk around on the ground instead of soaring through the sky.

Even though there are technically five other species that qualify as birds (Animal Crossing also features chicken, duck, eagle, ostrich, and penguin villagers), the general bird species still has one of the highest villager counts in the series. With twenty-one different birds to choose from, each with different feather colors and styles, it can be hard to peck out the right one.

Rabbit

Some of the most beloved villagers in the Animal Crossing series are rabbits, from classic characters like Genji to newer additions like Mira and Sasha. They are one of two species that have had at least one new villager introduced in every mainline entry, and hopefully that trend continues in the future because there isn’t a bad one in the herd yet.

There have been plenty of rabbits over the years, and somehow, all twenty-two of them are available as villagers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This is an incredibly rare achievement, which is shared with a handful of other species that have significantly lower villagers than rabbits. There are tons to see, so jump at every opportunity you can to meet them all.

Squirrel

It’s hard to imagine any town or village without a couple of squirrels running around, so it’s not very surprising to see how many villagers the species has in Animal Crossing. The critters have been running around since the very first game and have arguably some of the cutest characters in the series, from the galactic Ione to the smug Marshal.

Of the twenty-two squirrels, sixteen are female, leaving only six male villagers for the species. Many of them share a normal personality, so if you’re looking for someone with a positive attitude and no desire for drama, a squirrel villager is the perfect choice for your community. Just don’t expect them to go nuts when you talk to them for the tenth time in one day.

Cat

Even if you’re not a cat person, it’s impossible not to fall in love with at least one of the twenty-six cat villagers throughout the Animal Crossing series. Whether it’s actual villagers like Bob and Lolly or special characters like Rover and Blanca, cats are everywhere, and you’re more than likely to have at least one in your town, no matter which version you’re playing.

Out of the twenty-six cat villagers, only three have been forgotten about and are not available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Even with these missing characters, the cat species outnumbers the rest by a decent margin. It’s also impressive how many different cats there are, and each one is unique enough not to be confused with another.
