For long-time gamers, there’s typically two schools of thought when it comes to all-time games. Some believe Grand Theft Auto (any entry) tops that group, while others hold firm that there is nothing quite like Red Dead Redemption 2.

If you ask Dan Houser, who helped co-found Rockstar Games alongside his brother, Sam, that answer is an easy one. It’s Red Dead Redemption 2, according to the ex-head writer. He’ll also tell you why Bully 2 was never made, if you’re looking for a reason to be sad.

Grand Theft Auto Is Legendary, But RDR2 Is Revolutionary

In a wide-ranging interview at LA Comic Con with IGN’s Ryan McCaffrey, Houser was asked if there was any game, of the many he’s worked on, that stand out as the best.

“Red Dead 2, I think, was the best thing that I worked on,” Houser said. “The best single kind of realization of sort of open-world storytelling, thematic consistency, and understanding how the games are assembled to take you on an emotional journey.”

Indeed, few journeys are quite as emotional as the one Rockstar took players on in Red Dead 2. Beyond its narrative, which might be the best in gaming history, RDR2 does offer a very strong gameplay system, mixing some RPG and sim elements, alongside typical Rockstar open-world variety and mayhem.

To this day, Red Dead Redemption 2 maintains a 97 on Metacritic, a mark that very few games have ever achieved and fewer have ever surpassed. Of the 99 critic reviews cataloged, none are negative and only one is classified as “Mixed.” Its user score of 8.9 is also relatively high compared to other titles.

Even all these years after its release, the game is still being discovered by new players, going as far as to reset its own Steam records after a recent sale. Suffice to say, Houser might have a point. After all, he did co-found the dang company.
