Someone claims to have uncovered the deeper meaning behind the age-old riddle of why the chicken crossed the road, and it has caused everyone to completely lose their mind
“Why did the chicken cross the road?” We’re sure you know the question – but have you ever questioned why that question is, well, a question? Well, over on X (formerly Twitter ), someone claims to have uncovered the deeper meaning behind the age-old riddle – and it has caused everyone to lose their minds.
Posting on the platform under the handle Today Years Old, the philosophically-minded user reckoned that the answer to why the chicken crossed the road was that the road was not a road at all, but in fact was a metaphor for the afterlife.
They said: “I cannot believe it took me 25 years to realise that in the chicken crossing the road joke, the “other side” is the afterlife because it died”.
It is an interesting theory. After all, roads can be busy, and chickens can be slow, so the bird’s demise seems maybe more likely than it safely making its way across the street.
However, the free-thinking X user isn’t suggesting the animal has accidentally become roadkill, but rather it made a conscious decision to “cross the road” into the afterlife.
So how did the internet react to this chicken theory?
Well, the first 10 comments on the post seem to be from AI bots, but once you wade through those it becomes clear that opinions are divided.
While some seem won over by the macabre reading of the classic joke format, others reckon they may need more convincing.
“Bro that’s dark as hell but kinda genius not going to lie,” wrote one user, while another added that “their childhood had been ruined” by the realisation.
However, not all were so quick to believe the theory.
“It’s not that deep lil bro. He was just trying to get to the other side of the road,” someone responded, while another user angrily asked: “Why do you keep making stuff up that isn’t true?”
Interestingly, this recent X discussion is by no means the first time the question has been asked.
Celebrity braniac Bill Nye the Science Guy and Youtuber VSauce made a whole video about the question back in 2012, arguing that its power lies not in hidden darkness, but in its simplicity.
According to them, the chicken joke is best understood as an “anti-joke”, essentially one that deliberately refuses to deliver a clever punchline.
VSauce explained that when we hear a joke, our brains instinctively start predicting complex or surprising outcomes. The humour, therefore, comes from the complete collapse of those expectations. Its an example of the classic misdirect: “To get to the other side” is funny precisely because it is so ordinary, forcing the listener to realise they have overthought the situation entirely.
