This parent was so appalled by their daughter’s classmate’s birthday gift list that they don’t want to celebrate after all!
Like many modern things, some parts of birthday parties have gone digital. Invites are sent by apps like Partiful. No need to guess about the perfect presents — you can make an Amazon list or link out to an app just for that purpose. Gone are the days of wandering around the toy store looking for the perfect gift for a kid your child barely knows! Instead, their parents can build them a picture-perfect gift list, complete with links for where to buy every item, and the exact color they’d like it in.
This parent was really put off by one of these lists for a 6-year-old. The birthday girl’s parent is highly particular about the types of gifts that the kid can receive, and it makes you feel bad for the kid!
A lot of young people these days are going to be victims to their beige or “millennial gray” parents. You probably know the type — houses often have those gray floors that have become super popular, leading to that terminology. But more so, these folks are obsessed with maintaining neutral colors in their homes, and prohibiting any other colors from intruding into their space.
To some degree, this is understandable. Neutral-colored environments can be relaxing and soothing. But a lot of parents take this way too far. It’s all well and good to want a house like that as an adult, but we all know that children’s toys come in bright colors. Not to mention that kids like to play and get messy, which is not exactly acceptable behavior in a beige home. Parents like these don’t want their kiddos experimenting with rainbow Play-Doh when they could be quietly playing with wooden trucks. Any normal child toy has to fit a pre-established aesthetic — otherwise, it’s got to go.
This parent was particularly appalled by the list of acceptable gifts sent out by the birthday girl’s parent, and the problems are numerous. First of all, are these the actual gifts the birthday girl wants? Because it sounds like her parents are driving her choice in toys 100%, instead of letting the child pick things that match her interests. Second of all, there’s a real snooty tone that permeates this list. It’s going to be incredibly offputting towards guests, instead of welcoming them to celebrate. And third of all, if a guest gives you a present that you don’t like, what do you do? If you’re a polite member of society who values having strong friendships, you thank them for their generous gift. Then, a few weeks later, you can donate or regift that toy, and they’ll never know any better.
