Nintendo & The Pokemon Company’s new patents are vile.

The Pokemon Company and Nintendo’s new patents: US Patent 12,409,387 B2 and US Patent 12,403,397 B2

Please do go read them for yourself, some of the language may be misinterpreted by me, but I will do my best.

Nintendo just wrapped up and had their new patent approved today and the other approved last week. Many different gaming related media channels, articles, and forums are speaking out about these patents and that Nintendo is once again patenting video game mechanics. Specifically the ability to ride an object over a terrain that isn’t deemed the ground and the ability to summon objects to engage in a battle. I’ve seen people argue that for the “Summoning” patent it has to do with auto-battles, but that is not the case from the language, it is very simply when you run into a battle via a movement input, the screen changes focus to a battle scene, and you summon an object to fight on your behalf where a menu appears (ie Pokemon), the patent also includes the auto battle but is not just the auto battling system, based off the language. Either way, it is a huge issue. The “Riding” patent is you pressing an input during a prompt so you are now riding an object to aid you in crossing a terrain that is not deemed the normal ground.

These patents are a huge failure on US Patent law and should be challenged immediately. I am looking into how I can and will get in contact with a group, representative, and delegate to hopefully force some form an action. Creating a patent for basic game mechanics is deplorable and unjust. Fuck you Nintendo.
