There is a fine line between being a generous resident and letting your neighbor walk all over you.

A friend of mine has suburban parents who are simply too kind for their own good. They will frequently go out of their way to watch their neighbor’s dog when they’re out of town, mow their lawn, check on their house for them, etc. The list goes on. It’s as if they’re hired contractors at this point. This is a couple that does not travel much, so their neighbors seem to think they can squeeze all the help and favors out of them as possible. Of course, the one time during the entire past year when the roles were reversed proved to cause some trouble. This time, my friend’s parents were traveling to see their kid, and they asked for some help checking on their dog. Well, after all the assistance provided by my friend’s parents, the best these neighbors could do was decline to help and instead provide a contact for someone else. Of course, that should have been the end of all the favors my friend’s parents did for this couple, but like I said… they are too kind for their own good.

In this instance, we have a new homeowner who had just moved into the neighborhood when their neighbor informed them that their nanny would be taking up the parking spot in front of the new homeowner’s house five days a week. Evidently, the couple couldn’t have their own nanny use any of the spots in their driveway because those spaces were occupied by their personal chef and other folks who were doing work on their house.

The new homeowner politely declined, explaining that they would like that spot to be available for potential guests. The author even tried to negotiate some sort of compromise, to no avail. Instead, the neighbors decided to start a separate conflict with the author and their HOA regarding a simple property line dispute that could have been resolved without any external involvement.
