When you move abroad, you’re going to be prepared for there to be differences in the lifestyle that you’ll have to adapt to. However, one American man who moves his family from the US to the UK has shared the one particular British habit that has ‘blown his mind’ since moving to the UK.
Zach Lincoln often shares his experience of moving abroad with his 23,300 followers on Instagram after moving his family from American to the UK. In one of the latest videos, he shared the ‘wild’ difference he’s encountered in the UK and how it makes life feel so different.
Zach was seen talking to the camera in the clip, as he said: “I just realised that there’s this British thing that we’ve been experiencing that has slowly been blowing my mind. Honestly it’s been extremely touching and I didn’t realise how warm it was making me feel until someone pointed it out.
“Where we’re from, back in the States, people aren’t very sociable to strangers… it’s not like they flat-out ignore you, but people don’t really talk to you. People don’t really come up to me and say anything, basically ever.
“But since we’ve been here, not only have people talked to me, people have given me a ton of compliments.”
Zach then mentioned an example where a man took his phone to take a photo for him and complimented him on his ‘beautiful family’. He also said this wasn’t the first instance where that kind of thing had happened in the UK.
He also said people have been giving him little individual compliments a lot, such as, ‘Nice jumper’, ‘I like your cologne’, ‘Your daughters look like they’re having a wonderful time’, ‘You’re doing a great job parenting’.
Zach said he can ‘probably count on one hand’ the times he’s had a similar compliment in the five years he’s been parenting back in the States. “It’s happened like a dozen times since we’ve been here in the last two months,” he said. “So that’s crazy.”
Following up in the caption, he added: “It’s wild how being seen – really seen –feels so different here.”
Fans were loving the post, with it racking up more than 13,400 likes.
One person wrote: “I compliment people all the time without thinking about it! It’s just something we do. I’m glad you’re noticing that.”
While another added: “We moved to Yorkshire from the states two years ago and they are incredibly friendly. Haven’t lived in any other region but our northern experience has been amazing.”
A third chimed in: “Oh hell yeah. If I see someone wearing a cool outfit or whatever, I’m making a point of telling them. People in general are so quick to find problems, I like to do the opposite.
“I don’t think I’m the only one: be happy, make a stranger’s day! You never know how much good one random act of kindness might do.”
While a fourth wrote: “Every time I have given a compliment I meant it. It’s part of the Britain I know and love.”
