A Brazilian motorist had the misfortune of being caught on camera lighting up his Porsche sports car so he could cash the insurance policy.

On October 5th,  the Civil Police of Paraná was contacted by a man who claimed to have been stopped in traffic by armed men and stuffed in the trunk of his Porsche 911 Carrera before being driven to a rural area in Lapa and being set on fire. He claimed to have been rescued in the last second by passers-by who heard his screams from the burning vehicle, but had suffered minor burns. He told police he didn’t know his assailants or the reasons for trying to kill him, so police launched an investigation that revealed some peculiar details. The victim in this case appeared to have made up the story of his kidnapping, because CCTV from a farm close to the site of the arson showed the owner of the Porsche sports car setting it on fire himself.

Man Gets Caught on Camera Setting Fire to His Porsche for Insurance Purposes

Detectives investigating the case couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw a person with the same physical characteristics and wearing the same clothes as the owner of the Porsche driving it to the isolated rural area, casually dousing it in gasoline and then setting it on fire. Even after being confronted with the evidence, the car owner stuck to his version of the events, claiming that his burn wounds were proof that he was telling the truth.

G1 Globo reported that the 2018 Porsche 911 Carrera had outstanding Motor Vehicle Property Tax (IPVA) debts, but the amount of the debts was not disclosed. The car itself was estimated to be worth around 700,000 reais ($130,000), so it has been speculated that the owner had tried to cash the insurance policy on it, because selling the vehicle would have been difficult due to the outstanding tax debt.

Interestingly, the arson of the Porsche was caught by the only camera in a several-mile radius, so the owner must be kicking themselves for choosing that exact spot for their deed.

The investigation into this peculiar case is still ongoing, and the owner has not been charged with insurance fraud or anything else for that matter. Setting fire to a Porsche 911 for nothing is probably punishment enough, though.
