Never question a good thing. Sometimes, despite the temptation to meddle, when everything is going your way, you need to just leave better off alone. Of course, then you wouldn’t be one of the untold number of managers and owners who have managed to disrupt the balance of a solid team or upset an essential worker, forcing them into quitting.
The truth is that some people have no idea why their businesses or teams are successful, and even less still are capable of or willing to admit that one or several of their employees might be keeping the entire thing going. They’ll be even less willing to admit that this one worker might be pulling the weight of 3 or 4 people. Balking at any request for a raise, even if it’s still essentially saving them money, since they’re doing the work of multiple people who will need to be hired and paid if they leave.
This laborer was originally hired as a general laborer, but they quickly became experienced and knowledgeable about the ins and outs of their boss’s business. But as more and more of the tiny company’s team left, he simply took on their work, eventually becoming the sole worker in the company, doing the work of 4 people, and keeping the entire operation running. But when their cheap boss refused to reimburse them for an expense it pulled a thread that would unravel the entire thing.
