You may think you’re an all-star at your job, but the reality is that any of us could be fired at any time. Your bosses might not even have to give you much of a reason why! In many parts of the good old U S of A, your managers can just let you go because they feel like it. They can cite “performance issues” or “attendance issues,” when in reality, they’re just tired of the way you call out their flaws.
Some managers are very direct about this when firing their employees, while others play coy. Just ask the folks below, who have some interesting experiences to share. One person got sat down and told that they didn’t “look happy” at work, which was their basis for being laid off. And another person got fired for someone else’s mistake — they were told the wrong location to go to for a meeting, and even though it wasn’t their mistake, they were shown the door anyway. And perhaps the most ridiculous reason for a firing was the person who was canned because their cash register was 5 cents over. That’s right — not 5 cents short, but 5 cents too many. What a joke! On to better jobs that won’t fire you over a nickel.
I hope that in my lifetime, workers will gain some kind of additional protections so that if their employer does decide to discard them, they won’t just be stuck with 0 income and debts piling up. Employers should have to pay like, 3 or 6 months’ wages to fired workers ideally… but that’s in a perfect world. And we’re far from that with the state of employment these days.
Up next, read about some employees who made eyebrow-raising mistakes at work, like one person who “searched for new jobs… while still screen sharing.” Oops!
