You might have heard that Oblivion Remastered has a few unusual methods to raise your skills quickly, especially if you’re willing to put in a little time. Luckily, this method for grinding one magic skill can be applied to every school of magic in Oblivion Remastered, giving you an immense return on your time invested in preparing.

These are the best rings to keep in your inventory.
Luckily, if you’re only interested in leveling up one or two schools, like Illusion and Conjuration, then this method will be even quicker. However, it’s worth noting that you should amass a decent chunk of gold before proceeding, to ensure you can buy some of the recommended spells, if you don’t know them already.
How To Prepare To Grind Your Magic Skills
There are two major areas you’ll need to prepare so you can efficiently level up your magic skills fast:
- Prepare Spell Absorption effects
-
Have at least two spells for every school of magic
- One Novice spell and one Expert-level spell are preferable.
In truth, you can prepare to level up your magic skills fast from the earliest stages of the game when you select your birthsign while speaking to the emperor. The best birthsign to help quickly level up every magic skill is The Atronach.
The Atronach provides the following effects:
- Grants 150 additional magicka
- Gives 50 percent permanent Spell Absorption
- Magicka does not regenerate
While the Stunted Magicka effect completely prevents your magicka from replenishing naturally over time, you’ll gladly accept this trade-off thanks to the power of the Spell Absorption effect.
Spell Absorption is the most important part of efficiently grinding your magic skills to level 100. Luckily, you can also gain more Spell Absorption via these methods:
- Casting the Spell Absorption Spell
- Using Spell Absorption Armor
Ideally, you should aim to have 75 percent Spell Absorption or higher to consistently avoid damage and absorb magicka from the spells cast at you.
With 50 percent Spell Absorption from The Atronach to start with, an additional two armor pieces should give more than enough Spell Absorption, assuming each piece has at least a 15 percent effect.
Once you have your Spell Absorption situation sorted out, go to the Mages Guild vendors across Cyrodiil to ensure you have at least one spell from each school of magic that you can cast to begin leveling.
Then, buy a second spell to use once you’ve increased your mastery level to Journeyman or Expert level.
Magic Skills level up faster in Oblivion Remastered, the higher the spell’s cost. Thus, high-cost spells will accelerate your level gains as you approach level 100.
How To Get Level 100 Magic Skills Fast
Once you have your Spell Absorption effects ready and a spell from each school of magic, head to the Arcane University and seek out the Training Rooms building.
Inside the Training Rooms, there are two target walls downstairs and another handful upstairs.
Feel free to use whichever area you prefer, as you’ll be here for most of your grinding.
Between roughly 10:00 am and 5:00 pm every day, mages will continuously cast spells on the targets in these Training Rooms, which is perfect for you to use to your advantage.
Essentially, you’ll want to equip your Spell Absorption gear and stand between a mage and their target, so they hit you with their spells.
Being hit by their spells will refill your magicka thanks to your Spell Absorption effect, and enables you to repeatedly cast spells without running out of magicka for more than a second or two.
Test getting hit by multiple mages. Ideally, you want to stand in front of a mage who is using a strong spell, as it will refill more of your magicka per hit.
Keep an eye on how much magicka you regain from each mage’s spells to determine the best option.
Since using high-cost spells gives more experience per usage, you will switch to your second, stronger spell for each school of magic once you’re able to cast it.
Best Alteration Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Electric Shell
- Second Spell: Lightning Wall
These Alteration skills are relatively inexpensive and will help you level to Master level in no time. They’re especially useful if you’re absorbing shock-based spells from a Practice Room mage, as this will help mitigate damage on the off chance you don’t absorb a spell.
The downstairs room usually has a strong male mage who uses lightning-based spells.
Best Conjuration Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Bound Helmet
- Second Spell: Summon Clannfear
You can use any of the Bound (insert armor piece here) spells for the early levels here. The best way to accelerate your early-level Conjuration progress is by selecting multiple Bound spells for various pieces.
Using Bound Dagger, Bound Helmet, etc., in succession ensures that you’re able to keep gaining Conjuration levels while you wait for your conjured items to disappear.
Alternatively, you can use Dispel to clear your bound items immediately, creating a nice loop with Mysticism magic.
Best Destruction Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Weak Fireball
- Second Spell: Drain Skill: Alteration
Destruction is the only school of magic that you probably should level up in another location, like one of the surrounding forts in Cyrodiil.
Instead, the best way to level up your Destruction skill fast is to find a Lich and approach them with as much Spell Absorption gear equipped as possible.
Raise your game’s difficulty, then bait the Lich to hit you with spells. Since you’re absorbing the spells anyway, they won’t hurt you even though they will be more powerful. Instead, they’ll just fill your magicka faster.
Furthermore, using spells like Weak Fireball, or something like Drain Alteration will allow you to repeatedly attack the Lich without killing it, thus leveling up your destruction.
You can also use Restoration spells to heal the Lich and continue using them to absorb magicka and eat your attacks without fear of being defeated.
Best Illusion Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Void Gazer
- Second Spell: Shadow
Void Gazer is a solid spell that will get the ball rolling, but once you gain access to Shadow, you’ll be flying toward level 100.
Shadow is also one of the best Illusion spells to use if you want to remain hidden, so it will come in handy after you reach max level.
Best Mysticism Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Major Dispel
- Second Spell: Superior Spell Absorption
Mysticism forms an excellent loop with Conjuration, and you should level these two magic skills simultaneously using the following order of operations:
- Cast multiple ‘Bound’ spells to raise Conjuration
- Cast Major Dispel to reset your conjured gear and raise Mysticism
- Repeat
Using this loop will keep your Mysticism and Conjuration on a fast track to their max levels. Furthermore, once you gain access to Superior Spell Absorption (an excellent Mysticism spell in its own right), you should be regaining magicka consistently, if you weren’t already.
Best Restoration Spells For Leveling Up
- First Spell: Salve
- Second Spell: Heal Superior Wounds
Restoration magic can be leveled up in tandem with any other skill, though it might be best to do so while you’re fighting that Lich to level up Destruction.
Whichever method you prefer is great, as you can weave Restoration spells into any loop of casts if you want, or focus on spamming it once you’ve finished leveling the other skills.
