After defeating Ocelot in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, you roam some dark caves until you eventually face off against The Pain. He is the first member of the Cobra Unit that you go toe-to-toe with.
There is a reason why the Cobra Unit is legendary, and The Pain certainly plays a role in that. After all, anyone who has the ability to manipulate hornets to do his bidding is always going to be dangerous. As such, it can be a pretty tough fight. This is everything you need to know to make it easier.
The Pain’s Moves
The Pain has various offensive and defensive moves, and all of them utilize hornets. Here are the main ones and how to deal with them:
|
Move |
What It Is And How To Deal With It |
|---|---|
|
Hornet Armor |
He can’t be damaged while the hornets are covering his body. The best way to get rid of them is by shooting them with the M37 shotgun or using a smoke grenade. |
|
Aroma Jar |
He throws some sort of bottle at you that breaks and leaves an aroma that attracts hornets. Simply stay away from it once it breaks. |
|
Hornet Grenade |
His hornets combine into balls, and they head toward you. They essentially work like grenades, so you just need to get away from them when they head your direction. Alternatively, you can shoot them before they get to you. |
|
Mimic |
Sometimes, you will see two versions of The Pain on his rock. If you correctly guess which one is the right one by shooting him, it leaves the boss vulnerable to damage. It’s hard to determine which one is real, though. |
|
Tommy Gun |
His hornets spawn a Tommy Gun for him to use. He then unleashes a bunch of bullets at you. All you can do is move out of the way. |
|
Bullet Hornets |
In the second phase of the battle, he begins to use hornets that fire right out like bullets. This is another move that you can’t really stop. You just need to dodge. |
While some of these moves are dangerous, they are usually easy to avoid by diving underneath the water. This is because he struggles to attack you if you’re down there.
How To Defeat The Pain
As with every boss, there is a lethal and non-lethal approach to this battle. If you want to be lethal, you need to deplete his health with weapons that have the ‘DMG’ symbol. However, if you go for the non-lethal approach, you must use ‘STN’ and ‘ZZZ’ weapons to deplete his stamina bar.
Either way, you need to shoot him a bunch. Getting the chance to do that is the tricky part.
When the hornets are protecting him, you can use smoke grenades or the M37 shotgun to make them disperse, giving you the chance to attack.
Other than that, your best bet is to make use of sneak attacks. Therefore, you should swim around underwater to make him lose sight of you before popping up to get some shots in. Some weapons, like the handguns and the AK-47, allow you to shoot from the water, which can be useful for quick attacks.
Swimming around underwater can quickly deplete your stamina. So, make sure you have plenty of food. Frogs and Crabs from other parts of the cave can be useful snacks.
Once you’ve depleted his health or stamina, the battle ends. If you do it non-lethally, you unlock the Hornet Stripe camo.
