A 20-year-old Indian man is accused of having eloped with his 40-year-old soon-to-be mother-in-law only 9 days before his wedding.

Rahul and Shivani, a young couple from Aligarh, in India’s Uttar Pradesh state, were all set to be married on April 16. Invitations had been sent out, relatives had confirmed their attendance, but just 9 days before the big day, disaster struck. The 20-year-old groom got cold feet and disappeared, but he didn’t go alone; he eloped with Anita, the 40-year-old mother of his bride-to-be. To make matters worse, the pair also took the couple’s savings as well as Anita’s family savings, leaving Shivani and her father penniless.

On Sunday, April 6, Rahul left his home, claiming that he was going to shop for wedding clothes. Later that night, he called his father to tell him that he was leaving and to ask him not to bother looking for him. Around the same time, Shivani noticed that her mother and all their savings had disappeared as well, only the 40-year-old woman hadn’t left a message. Although both Shivani and her father, Kumar, had noticed the unusual relationship between Rahul and Anita, neither said anything, not wanting to ruin the upcoming wedding.

“I was supposed to marry Rahul on April 16, and my mother eloped with him on Sunday. Rahul and my mother used to talk on the phone a lot over the past three to four months,” Shivani told Indian reporters. “My mother has taken all our money. “She can do what she wants now, we don’t care. All we want is that the money and jewellery should be returned to us.”

Anita’s husband, Kumar, runs a business in Bengaluru and is away most of the time, but he too had noticed that Rahul talked more to his wife than he did his wife-to-be. Still, he didn’t say anything because the big day was coming up, and he didn’t want to stir things up. He has filed a missing persons complaint in the hopes that police will be able to track down Anita and her lover.

“I called Anita several times, but she had switched off her phone. I called the man too, but he kept denying that she was with him,” Kumar said. “Hours later, he finally said that I had troubled my wife for 20 years and that I should forget about her.”

“That man would not speak to my daughter but would keep talking to my wife,” Shivani’s father said. “I live in Bengaluru to run my business. I had heard that, for the past three months, they would talk to each other for 22 hours a day. I was suspicious but did not say anything because the wedding was around the corner. Anita left with the man on April 6 and took all our cash and jewellery.”
