Astute God of War fans – or, really, any God of War fans – will likely have noticed that I didn’t show an image of the canceled live-service game as the cover pic for this article. I’d prefer not to cross any wires – I’ll explain in a sec. What matters is that Bluepoint Games’ canned project, which would have been a multiplayer entry, would have had a Greek setting.

We now know this beyond a shadow of a doubt, and we can all discern at least a bit more. At minimum, it seems like it would have been a pretty good-looking video game. Which stands to reason, I suppose, given just how pristine God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarok proved to be. If visual cuts were being made here to support a more dynamic style, Bluepoint’s conceptual phase did a good job masking them. As far as early-stage screenshots go, we’ve seen far uglier.

Let’s Thank MP1st For This Pic

God of War's canceled Bluepoint live-service game.

See that lush image? Make no mistake; that’s from mp1st. Or, perhaps it’s optimal to say that it’s from mp1st’s source. Whoever that source may be, they gave mp1st a heck of a reveal package, and you should very much rush to that link I’ve provided to see them all.

As I’ve said, this is definitely a Greek-as-heck video game. At most, it might have explored Greek colonies throughout the Mediterranean and West Asia? But when folks think God of War, I reckon they think pantheons before specific settings; especially when the homes of gods tend to take first billing on that front, anyway.

Temples, caves, a weapon-packed room of some kind – there’s a lot to sift through here. Per what mp1st’s source has stated, Hades was in charge of that room, which is indeed very much an armory. Presumably, players would have stocked up on everything they needed to kick ass and take names, all thanks to Hades himself. mp1st even has a comparison pic showing what is called a “curse” having afflicted an area – the area in the one pic I took from ’em, in fact – as there’s an accompanying image which shows the zone in, er, healthier shape.

What’s it all mean? We can deduce only so much. The rest may be lost to time. Thankfully, it’s not like Sony is putting God of War on ice anytime soon. There’s an Amazon TV series en route, and modern Kratos VA (and Stargate SG-1 sensation) Christopher Judge wants the next game (which hasn’t yet been formally announced, by the way…) to take place in Egypt.

There’s even a Metroidvania-style God of War game on the way, or so some have claimed…
