A Thai woman who accidentally swallowed a fish bone, which got stuck in her throat, was shocked to see it eventually pierce her neck after she failed to remove it.
On June 17, Facebook user Suriyan Buppa-art posted a couple of shocking photos allegedly showing his wife’s neck with a sharp, white needle piercing the skin from underneath. The Thai man later told news outlets that his post was meant as a cautionary tale for people who enjoyed eating fish but neglected to make sure it was bone-free. Apparently, his wife was enjoying a fish soup when she accidentally swallowed a fish bone and felt a sharp pain in her neck. She tried dislodging the bone using folk remedies like eating rice and bread crust, but nothing worked, so she went to the hospital, where an X-ray exam didn’t reveal any foreign objects.

Although she still felt pain in her throat following the X-ray, he and his wife, Sang Lan, both assumed that the bone had been dislodged. Life went on as usual, and Sang Lan got used to the discomfort in her throat, thinking the wound would heal eventually, but two weeks later, she noticed her neck had become swollen. The woman suspected a condition linked to her thyroid and went to the hospital again.
The second doctor also performed an X-ray of her neck, per procedure, but noticed nothing unusual, so she prescribed some medicine and painkillers and sent the woman on her way. At home, while preparing to apply a pain relief patch on her neck, Sang Lan started rubbing the painful area she was about to stick it on when she noticed a pointy needle pressing against her skin from underneath. After applying a bit of pressure, a white needle head pierced the woman’s skin.

The shocked couple went back to the hospital for a third time, and doctors managed to remove a 2-cm fish bone from the woman’s neck. The team that operated on Sang Lan said that they had never seen anything quite like this before. The patient told reporters that she will stay away from fish for a while, maybe even for the rest of her life.
Fish bones rank pretty low on the list of weird things stuck in people’s throats, but it’s not every day that such a bone actually pierces someone’s neck from the inside.
