The Final Fantasy 13 trilogy is undoubtedly the most polarizing entry in Final Fantasy’s storied history. It has comfortably the lowest Metacritic user score in the series, sitting at 6.3, and is often subject to low rankings on critically curated lists. Those who do like the trilogy, though, really like it.

Final Fantasy 2 is the second-lowest ranked game, with a Metacritic user score of 6.5, and the original Final Fantasy is the third-lowest, with a score of 6.9.

Despite its mixed reception, the title remains one of the hardest games to play on modern consoles. It is, and has always been, available on PC, and it can be played on Xbox via its backward compatibility services. However, it has not been available on PlayStation since the PS3, and it has never been playable on a Nintendo console.

While soft rumors about a remaster have circulated for a while now, Final Fantasy 13 fans think we’ve got the best clue yet that a re-release is coming, and they think it could be announced soon, with one of the game’s actors set to host an upcoming PlayStation State of Play.

There have often been little rumblings about a Final Fantasy 13 Remaster, naturally to mixed receptions, but Square Enix decided to kick things into overdrive last year. Replying to composer Alex Moukala, who suggested “Final Fantasy XIII needs a remaster,” the developers said, “Any reason for a remaster instead of a remake?” An innocuous question, but one that got the wheels turning.

Yesterday, PlayStation announced a new State of Play, “curated for gamers in Japan and Asian,” with the event being MCed by actor Yuki Kaji. Kaji has held dozens of roles across TV, anime, and video games, including Eren Yeager in Attack on Titan, Shoto Todoroki in My Hero Academia, and Link in the original Hyrule Warriors game, but one role has turned heads (thanks, Genki). Kaji played Hope in Final Fantasy 13, and there is hope that his appearance at this showcase will usher in the announcement of a potential Final Fantasy 13 Remaster.

“Am I getting blue-balled here in believing that FF13 is getting a spotlight? Cause it’s working,” said HonkaiMain on Twitter. “Don’t give me hope that we’ll finally get the FF13 collection,” added Stu. The discussions continued elsewhere, too.

Given PlayStation’s proximity to the Final Fantasy franchise, with Remake, Rebirth, and 16 all launching as exclusives, and the fact that this showcase is geared towards Japanese gamers, it seems as good a time as any to announce a remaster. However, it’s worth keeping your expectations in check, as it could simply be a case of the company getting an actor who is massive in the aforementioned region to host its showcase.
