A family have been “watching their backs” after receiving an unusual present from a neighbour, leaving them questioning everything they thought they knew about life in their neighbourhood
Christmas is a time for giving but, sometimes, you can’t help but question the presents you receive. That was certainly the case for one family who were left unsettled after receiving a “bizarre” letter through their door in the early hours of Christmas morning, prompting them to wonder who could have sent it.
The envelope, which read “Merry Christmas Neighbour” on the front, immediately raised alarm bells as the message had been created using letters cut out from a magazine rather than being written by hand. Inside, the family found a $100 (£74) gift card that could be redeemed at several local stores, along with a $75 (£55) Amazon gift voucher.
But, instead of feeling grateful for the generous gift, the family admitted they felt “freaked out” by the anonymous delivery and are now keeping a closer eye on their surroundings.
Sharing the strange experience on Reddit, the homeowner wrote: “My Christmas has certainly been… interesting. This morning when I woke up, my mum showed me something really weird she got in the mail. It was an envelope.
“Inside was a $100 gift card that could be used at a few nearby grocery stores, as well as $75 worth of Amazon gift cards. We have no idea who dropped it off, and my mum is really freaked out about it.
“This whole situation is incredibly bizarre. The fact that whoever did this took the time to cut out letters from a magazine instead of just writing with a pen like a normal person is extremely creepy.”
Adding to the unease, the envelope also featured unusual images of pigeons eating popcorn on the back, leaving the family wondering whether the pictures had some kind of hidden meaning. What made the situation even more unsettling was the timing.
The homeowner explained: “My mum and I were up watching a Christmas movie until 11pm on Christmas Eve, and I didn’t go to sleep until around 12.30am.
“None of us saw anyone come by to drop off the envelope. The receipt shows the gift cards were bought earlier that evening at 6.57pm, meaning the only possible time it could have been delivered was in the middle of the night… which is creepy.”
The family tried to work out who could have sent the unusual gift, narrowing it down to three neighbours. However, without any solid evidence, they admitted it could have been sent by someone they don’t even know.
Seeking answers, the homeowner asked fellow Reddit users: “I just wanted to share this and see if anyone has any ideas about what the hell is going on, or what any of it means. I hope you all have a happy new year, and please don’t put dead birds on people’s cars. Merry Christmas!”
The post quickly attracted concerned responses. One user commented: “Get a ring camera and make sure everything is secured. Be safe.”
Another added: “Document it with the police. They can’t do much right now, but if there are further incidents it’s good to have it on record.
“I used to be in law enforcement and we would do what were called ‘close patrols’, officers would drive by the house when they were free just to make sure nothing looked strange. Increased police presence can scare off someone if there’s bad intent.”
A third user warned: “Get a camera. Nobody puts this much effort in and only does it once. There will probably be another letter.”
