Duke University Reacts to White Lotus Using Logo

Duke University thinks The White Lotus is failing on its messaging.

In fact, the school, whose fictional alum include Jason Isaacs and Patrick Schwarzenegger’s father-son characters on the HBO series, would prefer that the inclusion of its logo on the show’s wardrobe be removed entirely.

“Duke University did not approve the use of its marks in The White Lotus,” the university’s vice president for communications, marketing and public affairs Frank Tramble shared in a statement to NBC News. “Duke appreciates artistic expression and creative storytelling, but characters prominently wearing apparel bearing Duke’s federally registered trademarks creates confusion and mistakenly suggests an endorsement or affiliation where none exists.”

More specifically, the North Carolina-based school—which is where the fictional Ratliff family, played by actors Parker Posey, Jason, Patrick, Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook, is supposed to be from—takes issue with the nature of the scenes in which patriarch Timothy repped his character’s alma mater.
