Dog owner Katie was stunned when she weighed her seven-month-old golden retriever puppy Enzo, “double checking” the number on the weighing scales to check it was correct
A dog owner adopted a golden retriever puppy and was left flabbergasted by his size just six months on. Golden are an exceptionally popular breed among dog lovers, known and adored for their gentle, friendly, playful and loyal temperaments, plus their emotional awareness, which has made them widely championed as the perfect family pet.
The breed is recognised by their long, golden coat and large build, yet one woman was still taken aback after putting her seven-month-old golden retriever puppy on the scales. Katie, who shares content on TikTok under @barkstreetboys_, is highly experienced with dogs, having cared for them for years.
She and her husband currently have four golden retrievers, including Rory and Enzo, a pair of siblings who are the newest family members to join their household. Despite both brothers receiving identical portions of food since Katie and her husband welcomed them home, Enzo has grown considerably larger than his sibling.
Katie and her partner were compelled to “double check the scales” in an amusing TikTok video showing the pair weighing their seven-month-old pooch. In the footage, which has already amassed more than 62,000 views, Katie’s husband can be seen lifting Enzo while stepping onto scales.
Cradled in his arms, Enzo gazes mournfully at the camera, providing an additional touch of comedy to the clip. After subtracting her partner’s weight from the figure shown on the scales, the couple realised their puppy tips the scales at more than six stone.
In text overlaying the video, Katie wrote: “The moment we had to double check the scales. Seven months old and 38.7kg (85lbs and over 6st).” In the caption, she added: “If you’ve had a golden retriever pup a similar weight, how big are they fully grown?”
In the comments section, one TikTok user shared: “Our show line golden was big like that as a puppy! He is 42kg now and looks perfect, not overweight, he is just a big boy.”
Katie replied: “Is he quite lean? Enzo is tall, big head, big feet, quite broad shoulders! We have his brother who is much lighter/different build and he is much lighter!”
Another said: “Our two-year-old golden is 27kg this makes her feel absolutely tiny!!!! What the helly.” Others branded Enzo “so handsome” and “a little chonker”, while someone else said: “What a big boy! He’s gorgeous!”
But some expressed concern about the dog’s weight, which prompted the couple’s dog walker Megan to clarify: “I can say as Enzo’s dog walker that he is not overweight and his vet has confirmed this. Katie and her family have had this line of retrievers for years and know exactly how to look after them. This video is a completely unflattering angle which doesn’t do his real figure justice.
“He is a happy and well cared dog just as his brothers and uncles. Katie was reaching out for people’s experiences, not opinions.”
Megan included a photo of Enzo lying on his back on a rug, where he appears considerably trimmer, and added: “Please watch what you say to others, especially without knowing the whole story – here is another pic of Enzo which clearly shows the opposite of what others have suggested.”
Getting a dog is a substantial commitment that can span 10-15 years or beyond, depending on your selected breed’s life expectancy. Every dog demands devoted attention to their needs, with owners accountable for guaranteeing they receive proper nutrition, enough physical activity, regular grooming, and mental enrichment.
Prior to getting a dog, thorough research is crucial and it’s important to remember that not every breed is suitable for first time owners. Professional training is often necessary.
Lots of rescue organisations and charities have plenty of dogs waiting for their permanent homes, so it’s well worth exploring the advantages of adopting a rescue animal rather than buying from a breeder.
