Yes, the disc comes packaged in a box, inside another box
The Emperor’s New Groove is one of Disney’s more unique animated features — it’s one of the last films to be released during the Disney Renaissance, a time when the company cemented its reputation with timeless classics such as The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and more. But unlike its contemporaries, this film didn’t have Broadway musical montages or romance. Its aim was strictly to get laughs — packing as many as possible into its under-90-minute runtime.
Directed by Mark Dindal and starring David Spade, John Goodman, Patrick Warburton, and Eartha Kitt, The Emperor’s New Groove now celebrates its 25th anniversary with its first-ever 4K Blu-ray release. The beloved animated comedy returns to the big screen at Hollywood’s legendary El Capitan Theatre from Nov. 21–24, before landing on digital platforms (Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango at Home) on Dec. 9 alongside a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray release.
Although the press release doesn’t mention any special features, audiences deserve to see Kitt’s rendition of “Perfect World,” the only song in the film that Tom Jones performs. Or a behind-the-scenes look at Warburton improvising the humming song in Kronk’s infamous sneaking scene (in which Disney made Warburton sign the rights over to it on the spot).
It might be wishful thinking, but an in-house documentary exploring how the film was originally conceived as a musical romantic comedy in the spirit of the Disney Renaissance — when The Emperor’s New Groove first began development in 1994 under the title Kingdom of the Sun — would make an incredible bonus feature. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered on that piece of history if Disney doesn’t.
The Emperor’s New Groove 4K Blu-ray edition will be available on Dec. 9
