A Starbucks fan ventured to their local branch to order their favourite drink only to be left with a sour taste in their mouth after another customer made a “wild” request
A Starbucks customer was floored after receiving a “wild” demand from a fellow patron while queuing up for a coffee. An elaborately concocted beverage or simple caffeine buzz is a daily must-have for many people, and popping into a local independent coffee shop or popular high street chain is a common part of their routine.
Starbucks, founded in 1971, boasts more than 40,000 stores across the globe. Whether it’s your preferred venue or not, its popularity is undeniable. One Starbucks fan recently ventured to their local store for their usual “grande iced caramel macchiato” and noticed a woman standing behind her, “fidgeting and sighing like she’s in a rush”.
The customer didn’t take much notice of the woman until she leaned forward and said: “Hey, are you gonna pay for my coffee too, or should I just use your card? You look like you could.”
Feeling “so confused”, the customer simply said “what?” to the woman, who then declared: “You’ve got a fancy drink, you could afford to get me a small coffee. Come on, I’m not asking for much.”
The customer was stunned by the woman’s demand and told her firmly that they would not be buying her a coffee, especially as they didn’t know her.
They also questioned why the woman felt a complete stranger would purchase her drink for her.
In response, the woman simply said: “Wow, selfish much?” Before “storming off” without buying anything at all.
After sharing the bizarre exchange on Reddit, fellow social media users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts.
One person said: “It’s wild how some think they can just demand free stuff from strangers!”
Another person said: “Sometimes after having a rough day, trying to use the last few dollars for a beloved treat to feel better is necessary. Doesn’t mean I’m rich. But really, who had the audacity to say that to a stranger?”
A third person observed: “Wow, projection much? Pretty audacious to suggest that someone is selfish because they don’t want to buy a random stranger a coffee. Sometimes you just have to shake your head and walk away.”
Another person commented: “Wow, so entitled to think they can legit ask that of OP [original poster]. Doesn’t matter what someone else orders or how much money they may or may not have, it doesn’t mean you get to ask for some random stranger to cover the cost of your drink.”
Someone else said: “If she asked nicely rather than saying it like how she did, she would’ve been more likely to find someone to buy her a coffee.”
To which, the original poster replied: “FR (for real)! Like if she’d just been like ‘hey, I’m short a couple bucks, mind spotting me?’ I probably would’ve said yes. But the entitlement?? Nahhh”.
Other people noticed how the customer had described the woman as “fidgety” and wondered if this was a sign of something else going on. One person said: “Sounds more mentally unstable than entitled to me.”
Some believed her behaviour could be indicative of substance abuse issues or cravings, though there is no suggestion of this. The majority simply branded her “entitled”, while others weren’t convinced the situation happened at all.
