This person isn’t sure if they should provide a recommendation to a coworker after the way he suddenly quit his job…
Although it used to be commonplace to give your work 2 weeks’ notice before leaving, some employees balk at this idea. After all, when companies let their workers go, which happens far too often these days, they don’t give them any warning. They’re just laid off with 0 time to get their affairs in order. Of course, if you respect your bosses and want them to give you recommendations in the future, you probably should give them 2 weeks’ notice. But if you’re already fed up with the working environment and have something new lined up, well, you can just quit on the spot.
This guy quit in an especially funny way when he used the “resign” button on the Workday software as his parting message. Workday is some kind of HR software, so there’s probably nothing technically wrong with what he did! Commenters also told his coworker who posted the story that they shouldn’t be judging the guy so harshly. “He just woke up one morning and clicked the resign button in Workday and stopped working,” this coworker complained. This makes them hesitant to recommend him — after 4 years of working somewhere, they think this represents a lack of decorum. I kind of agree with the person who wrote the story — it isn’t the most professional thing to do. But for all they know, their coworker could’ve already run things by HR before hitting that resign button. Maybe they can reach out to the coworker to clear things up before making any final judgments about him and his future plans.
