Lancashire couple Hannah and Sam had bought what they thought was their dream home that needed just a bit of touching up — but the pair were stunned at what they saw on one wall

A British couple have been left chilled to the bone after discovering four words scrawled on their cellar wall. The pair have admitted they were petrified at the discovery — but are now leaning into it.

Hannah and Sam bought the house as a means to help restore the property to its former glory. However, she were stunned when they found the writing whilst clearing out the contents of the former owners.

Since then, the pair have done extensive research on what the chilling words mean and when they could have been written. Now, they are almost thrilled to have the words engraved in their cellar as they show viewers their renovation journey.

Hannah and Sam — both from Lancashire — first bought their home in 2024. A property built in the 1840s, the house is filled with character and seemed like a perfect fit for the couple and their three children.

However, when the pair bought the house, they knew that some parts of the building needed just a little bit of tender love and care, which they had no issue with.

Describing their new home as a “slow renovation project”, they set up an Instagram account to show their gradual restoration of the house.

But in one recent update, viewers were left shocked when the couple revealed that four chilling words had been written on the walls of the cellar underneath the house. Whilst clearing the room out, they found the words “Death walks behind you” carved in.

The video, uploaded on December 8 revealed that the pair were definitely not expecting to find the chilling message. However, after doing some more research into the meaning of the words, things have suddenly shifted and their fright is now excitement.

Hannah told Newsweek: “When we initially entered the cellar and saw the writing, we didn’t know what to think, especially seeing the words ‘death walks behind you’, which we didn’t recognise as lyrics. But, as we looked around, we quickly recognised the bands and thought it was brilliant.”

The video then proceeds to turn around as the cellar is splattered with bright paint, all of which have iconic rock phrases. Quotes from the likes of Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and Black Sabbath can be seen right across the walls.

Taking to the caption, Hannah admitted she was in “shock” when they first saw the paint, as it had not been mentioned by their estate agent when they bought the house. But since then, the couple have accepted the bold decorations within their underground cellar.

The video has since garnered hundreds of likes, with many taking to the comments section to leave their own remarks on the lyrics. One user penned: “Awesome taste in Gen X music!”

Another viewer explained: “Creepy at first, but cool when you realise.” Meanwhile a third joked: “My daughter won’t let us buy a house with a cellar, they really freak her out… I’m going to send her this!”

Sadly, renovations meant the chilling phrases had to go from the walls. However, the pair do have a plan to revive them.

Hannah added: “We were gutted when the render had to come off the walls, but it was simply too damp.” To combat this, the home owners took photos that will be turned into prints to hang on the walls once the renovation is done.
