Charlie Sheen is sharing his full story—not just half.

Now that the Two and a Half Men actor is eight years sober, he detailed the biggest lesson he learned from his public downfall and addiction battle, which ultimately led to his firing from the CBS sitcom.

“I just don’t know what I was trying to prove,” Charlie exclusively told E! News Sept. 4 at the premiere of his new Netflix documentary aka Charlie Sheen. “I still haven’t cracked that nut. And to take it that far, to keep pushing the envelope and chasing whatever that next thing was? I don’t know.”

In fact, the 60-year-old had a sobering realization—that death may have been his only wakeup call.

“I had so much evidence by that point that there was really nothing left except a funeral or a wake or something awful,” he continued in the interview, airing tonight on E! News at 11 p.m. “That’s the stuff I look back on. I’m just like, ‘Huh, that could have been pulled back a little bit.’”

But despite his difficult journey, Charlie—who is dad to daughter Cassandra, 40, with ex Paula Profit, daughters Sami, 21, and Lola, 20, with ex Denise Richards, and twin sons Bob and Max, 16, with ex Brooke Mueller—has been able to maintain a positive outlook about his life path.
