Simple changes can be the most effective way to boost heart health
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been identified as a ‘clinical priority’ by the NHS, with more than seven million people in the UK affected by it. Cardiologist Dr Francesco Lo Monaco, founder of the National Heart Clinic on London’s Harley Street, and author of Heart Saviour, has shared three small, consistent changes you can make to improve your heart health and support your cardiovascular system.
Dr Lo Monaco said: “Some of the most powerful ways to support heart health aren’t dramatic or extreme. They’re small, everyday habits that help reduce inflammation and strain on your cardiovascular system over time.”
Look after your oral health
Gum disease creates ongoing inflammation, and the chemicals that are released from this process can get into your bloodstream and speed up artery ageing. Dr Lo Monaco said: “Brushing twice a day for two minutes, plus daily flossing, is a surprisingly effective way to help protect your heart.”
Prioritise consistent sleep
If your sleep is short or regularly broken, your body remains in a state of stress, which consequently raises inflammation and puts extra pressure on your heart. To combat this, Dr Lo Monaco said: “Your heart responds quickly when your sleep becomes more regular, so aim for a consistent bedtime and wake-up time.”
Laugh more
Dr Lo Monaco explained: “Laughter is not just about feeling good, it releases natural chemicals that help your blood vessels relax. This can improve blood flow and lower stress hormones within minutes. It’s one of the simplest ways to support your heart and vascular health.”
Dr Lo Monaco said that it is often the smallest habits that have the biggest impacts, and by gradually implementing these habits into your everyday routine, you can better improve your heart health.
