This office is taking the “hot desk” situation to an extreme, and this worker is at their wits’ end.
In some fields these days, having a hot desk situation is totally fine. At a lot of jobs, you just need your laptop (and maybe a very large coffee). Gone are the days of bringing personal decorations to work, plastering your cubicle with photos of your family and friends. Instead, a lot of offices just have rows of empty tables or desks where people can plop down anywhere. They can work for a few hours or a full day, but when 5 o’clock rolls around, they’ll pack up their laptop and leave the desk. Then the next day, they’ll sit somewhere else, and so on.
This is especially helpful if you work with different teams who you need to meet with, but not everyone is sold on the idea. Sometimes it’s nice to have a space that’s just yours! You don’t have to worry about who sat there last, or who you’ll find yourself sitting next to, you can just chill out in the same place every day.
