Have you ever wondered what your aura color is?
Aura is a field of energy surrounding all living beings, invisible to the common eye.
We can see the aura by concentrating deeply or through aura photography, which allows us to understand the emotions and vibes that are active in our lives. Auras aren’t good or bad — just the cards that we are dealt with at a specific moment in time.
The purpose of understanding the aura is to have a better comprehension of how to navigate matters and to evolve into greatness by comprehending the colors and corresponding chakras.
Wondering how to find yours? Read on for a complete guide to understanding auras.
What is an aura?
According to Eileen Lee, aura photographer, artist and author of The Ultimate Guide to Auras: How to Read, Cleanse, and Shift Color Energy to Change Your Life, “Our aura is the electromagnetic field that surrounds us and all living beings.”
Lee explains, “This energy field is a reflection of our potential — it’s a vessel for our experiences, actions, mindset and emotions of our past, present and future.”
“The colors that we see in the aura stem from the chakra system, a network of channels that consist of seven major energy centers that are entwined with our central nervous system along the spine, serving as gateways through which the main energetic channels of the body flow,” she continues.
“Our chakras are portals for us to access different levels of consciousness aka different areas of focus in life or different life themes,” adds Lee. “What we choose to focus on manifests as the colors that appear in our aura, showing us which chakras we are activating.”
Why is the aura a spectrum of colors?
Simply put, it ranges based on the different emotions that affect the various chakras.
For example, when I had my aura photo taken, my heart chakra was pink. Therefore, I can say that my heart is attuned and open. Another time, I had a green aura at my root chakra, meaning growth was coming that I was resisting and needed to embrace to transform my life.
Can your aura change colors?
Definitely! Just as our feelings change easily, it makes sense for our auras to evolve, too.
Also, we can pick up the vibes from those that surround us — especially if we live in big cities where everyone is in close proximity to each other. Energy is contagious.
How can you find your aura?
You can get an aura photo taken with an aura camera, which is a service that Lee offers. The photographs allow us to become aware of our current mindset.
Color magic practitioner and author of Sober Magic, Sarah Potter, suggests the following (if you’re unable to get your photo taken): “After meditating or journaling, ask yourself: If my energy had a color today, what would it be? Let your intuition answer without judgment. This color can give insight into what you’re processing, where you need support, or how to nourish yourself. Over time, this becomes a powerful language between you and your spirit.”
Another way to get in touch with your aura is to “find a quiet place,” according to Potter.
“Close your eyes, take a few grounding breaths, and stretch your hands out in front of you slowly,” she explains. “Move them outward and inward, paying close attention. Can you feel a subtle resistance or tingling where your aura begins? This boundary is often soft, warm, or lightly magnetic. That’s your field!”
What do the aura colors mean?
Decoding the aura is the fun part! It’s also good to know there can be a few colors mixed together that create an unusual hue. By deconstructing each color, we will be able to understand the energies and sentiments present.
It’s also good to note which colors fall on which side. The left side of the photo, which would be our right side, IRL, is the receptive side of what we feel and bring in. The opposite side, the right side of a photo and the left side IRL depicts the sentiments we put into the world through creativity. So, let’s say I have red on my natural right side and orange on the left, showing that I am utilizing the creativity surrounding me in my art.
Lee broke down the colors and the corresponding chakras below:

Why is the aura important to maintain and understand?
We all want to be the best versions of ourselves and in order to do that we must connect with our spirit and get clear. Potter explains that “Tuning into your aura helps you become more grounded, intentional, and energetically clear.
It’s a powerful tool for intuitive self-care and spiritual empowerment. By understanding your aura, you deepen your awareness of your energetic boundaries, emotional landscape and how you show up in the world.
It creates space for self-awareness and guidance from within, especially in a world that often pulls us out of alignment. When you’re connected to your aura, you can better protect your energy, attract what truly aligns, and release what no longer serves you.”
