4chan is officially back online today.
The imageboard site had been down for 10 days, ever since a hack that restored its /QA/ board and leaked the emails of its lead administrators (called “janitors”) hit the site last week.
Members of the rival site Soyjak.party claimed responsibility for the attack shortly after, although the true person or party behind it remains unconfirmed.
It happened at approximately 10:05 p.m. EST on April 14th. The emails and other sensitive documents were widely shared shortly after, and the site went dark thereafter for over a week.

At approximately 1:10 p.m. EST on Friday, the 25th, 4chan went back online, allowing anons to return to well-known boards like /x/ (paranormal) and /pol/ (politics), among many others.
Possibly to avoid general hysteria, 4chan administrators didn’t tweet about it right away, but it didn’t go unnoticed by many users eagerly awaiting its return.
On Wednesday, whoever’s in charge of the site’s Twitter / X account posted about WIRED’s article, which stated that 4chan was likely not coming back. “Wired says, ‘4chan Is Dead.’ Is that so?” said the site’s cheeky response.
Wired says “4chan Is Dead.”

The site is back a day after an alleged email from janitor GrapeApe was shared on X. The email shown stated that 4chan was coming back soon and that some things would be different, most notably the removal of /f/ (flash) and PDFs temporarily being disabled.
However, now that it’s back, it seems that at least the /f/ board isn’t permanently gone.
Reactions to the site’s return quickly flooded social media today. “I will never speak badly of you ever again,” said one excited X user. Others cheered on the /r/4chan subreddit as word spread.
The celebratory tone feels far removed from the initial doom experienced after the ban, when many realized that a Chicken Jockey meme could be the last 4chan post ever shared.
Only time will tell if Soyjak.party or another, unknown hacker group will strike again.
