Hi, Mark, love the blog; not my first question and maybe it’s been asked before, but here goes:
We’ve all got things that we loved before and see in a completely, almost embarrassing light as we aged. Many of us love to riff on what a cultural touchstone something like Gilligan’s Island is, but I’m sure very few of us go out of our way to sit down and watch it again (except to relive the Ginger v. Mary Ann debate). Goes for music and food.
I’m wondering if there is/are anything that you used to think of as lousy/boring/stupid when you were younger, and now see as being worthy of revisiting again and again? I will take It’s About Time as an answer…
That’s a good question, Dan. There are oodles of things I liked when I was young that haven’t survived The Test of Time or maybe me just raising my later standards of what I liked. When I was a kid, I loved Libby’s Vienna Sausages. Now, I find them disgusting and I don’t think they’ve changed the recipe much if at all. But I can’t think of a food I like now that I once disliked.
As far as TV shows, books, movies…things like that…there are a few. One of my favorite movies is Billy Wilder’s Ace in the Hole. I didn’t like it when I first saw it but I think that was because I was too young and naïve to really grasp what it was all about. That was true of a lot of dramas as opposed to comedies. But I don’t think that’s what you’re asking about, either.
I recall not being much of a fan of Disney animated features when I was younger but I came to appreciate them as I got older. I can’t think of a TV show I once thought was lousy/boring/stupid that I later liked. There were some that just weren’t on my immediate radar but I certainly didn’t have a negative opinion of them until years later…but again, I don’t think that’s what you’re asking.
I’m going to think about this for a while and I may come up with one. But maybe not.
