Monday evening, I took my lovely friend Rebecca to the Magic Castle…first time she’d been there; also the first time she’d seen me in a jacket and tie. Most men look better in such outfits. Me, I somehow always look like the greeter at a Walmart in Nicaragua.
I became an Associate Member of the Academy of Magical Arts in 1980 and a few years later, passed the audition to be made a full Magician Member…and no, I have never performed there except for that screening committee. You have to be a much better magician than I am to have that honor. (And to show you that I’ve been working too long on Groo, I just typed “mulch better” and corrected it.)
The Academy of Magical Arts is the organization and the Magic Castle — an awesome building erected in 1909 — is our clubhouse. It’s a private club where one goes to eat great food and see great magic. A lot of them even go to consume alcohol — which I don’t do even though I’m aware it would make the tricks more mystifying.
You can read all about the building and how it’s a club for us om this page and no, I can’t or won’t give you a pass if I don’t know you well.
Also, the Castle is being closed for certain weeks this year. The real estate has a new owner who’s spending serious dinero on making the place even better and that means being Closed for Construction now and then this year. Rebecca has been asking me for some time to take her there so I figured we oughta do it before those closures. She had a very good time which means that I had a very good time showing her our clubhouse. It’s just about the only thing in town that’s worth putting a tie on for, even if it does make you look a Walmart greeter in Nicaragua.
