The house is on the market for £600,000, and features four bedrooms, three bathrooms, a garage, an electric vehicle charging point, a separate garden room, and even its own sauna

People have been baffled by a bizarre design choice in one of the bathrooms of a house on the market for £600,000. Pictures featured in the Rightmove listing for the four-bedroom detached house in Skelton, just outside York, show a large living room and huge separate kitchen/diner area, a big garden, and a separate garden room.

It also has three bathrooms, a garage, three bathrooms, an electric vehicle charging point, and even its own sauna room. But it’s the design of one of the bathrooms that has people taken aback.

The images, which appear to be of a smaller WC on the ground floor, show the walls of the room covered in what looks like artificial grass, or AstroTurf. The strange décor even features small yellow flowers dotted around the wall. And the floor is strange too – painted a deep blue, it features an image of four fish swimming towards the toilet.

People on Reddit were baffled. One said: “Astroturf a wall? Why why why.” Another wrote: “That’s the worst crazy golf hole I’ve ever seen.”

Someone else replied: “It’s rare that someone digs out a property photo of something that I’ve really, truly never seen before. Lots of weird stuff, sure, but usually variations on a theme. Horrifying AstroTurf Bathroom is the first truly new and unique one of the year for me.”

Another wrote: “That is not a hygienic bathroom surface material.” A different user said: “Did someone lose a bet? And HOW DO YOU CLEAN THIS?? Ewww.” And someone else wrote: “Why why why, the rest of the house is so normal and nice?!”

But others defended the choice. One said: “The downstairs loo reminds me of the Big Breakfast house or some other ‘wacky’ late 90s set dressing so I don’t hate it.”

Another wrote: “…….I don’t hate it.” A third said: “I mean it’s one way to guarantee viewings, I mean who doesn’t want to see that in person?!”

The listing on Rightmove describes the home, which came onto the market at the start of this month and is being marketed by York-based Ashton Estate Agents, as a “beautifully presented four-bedroom detached home” which “offers the perfect balance of tranquil village living and exceptional convenience”.

It continues: “Internally, the home has been finished to an exceptional standard, blending style, comfort, and practicality throughout. To the front elevation, a generous lounge provides a welcoming retreat, complete with a charming log-burner – perfect for cosy evenings.

“To the rear, the property has been thoughtfully extended to create an impressive and expansive family room, ideal for modern living and entertaining. This stunning space flows seamlessly into a fully equipped kitchen, designed with both functionality and style in mind.

“The extended accommodation further benefits from a second kitchen, a separate utility room, and a luxurious downstairs sauna – creating a unique and versatile living arrangement. A distinctively designed ground floor WC adds a further touch of character to this remarkable home.”

It goes on to describe the bedrooms upstairs, one of which features a Japanese soaking bath, as well as the garden room, or workshop, at the rear. It concludes: “This exceptional home combines generous living space, high-quality finishes, and a highly sought-after location. Offered for immediate viewing, this is a rare opportunity not to be missed.”

While AstroTurf is often used to refer to all kinds of artificial grass, it is actually the name of an American company producing artificial turf.
