More than three decades on from the invention of the deep-fried Mars bar, another battered chocolate treat is causing a stir after being dreamed up by a fish and chip shop

A fish and chip shop has been hilariously lamented for “going too far” after it introduced a new item to its menu in time for Easter.

The Oxfordshire chippy caused a stir on Reddit after a customer shared a snap of its shop window. In it, they advertised its “Battered Malteser Bunny” delicacy, which are on sale this spring at a cost of £1.50 each.

Things have gone too far,” quipped the customer in the CasualUK subreddit, who also pointed out the takeaway offers battered Cadbury’s Creme Eggs and a “takeaway fried breakfast for seven quid”.

“I’d report that to the RSPCA mate,” one Reddit user joked of the perished bunnies. A second quipped: “There’s a very thin line between genius and madness.”

Others confessed they’d be willing to give it a try, however, including one Reddit user who exclaimed: “I need the location immediately.” A second confessed: “Would definitely try it for £1.50.”

Whilst a third commented: “Honestly this is definitely one of those images where the picture of the wrapper helps a lot because I was a bit like oh wtf, and then like oh, of course.”

Elsewhere, a confused individual pondered: “How would it hold its shape after being deep fried? Wouldn’t it just end up being a deep fried chocolate blob?”

Whilst a past customer recalled: “I think I know exactly what chippy that is… weirdly. They always do this around Easter. I remember when they first had a sign up for a battered Creme Egg.”

The craze of battering sweet treats reportedly began in Scotland in 1992 with the deep fried Mars bar. John Davie claims to have invented it, before it later went on sale at The Haven Chip Bar in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.

He previously told the Daily Record: “It’s amazing to think that what we did one day when we were 15 has become something Scotland is known for around the world. Cardio surgeons everywhere will be trying to hunt me down.

“The irony of it all is that I don’t even like chocolate. I’ve never even tasted a deep-fried Mars bar and don’t think I ever will.”

He also recalled: “I remember asking what could be deep-fried. I was told, ‘You’re in a fish and chip shop – you can deep-fry anything.’ So I decided on a Mars bar. The rest is history.”

While the battered sweet treat may have left people divided, it also seemed to give some a good chuckle. They just couldn’t get over how wild it sounded.

The chip shop has been asked to comment about what inspired the latest foodie offering.
