One of the most relatable parts of watching TV is the friend groups. They hang out in iconic apartments and shops, support each other through some interesting adventures, and give us major FOMO. But let’s be real: some of these groups would be an absolute nightmare IRL.
I rounded up some of the absolute best friend groups in TV history — they’re the funniest, most supportive, and all-around most amazing friends. BUT, we can’t forget about the worst: these are the friends that would keep you stressed 24/7, and would never tell you that you have something in your teeth…
Here are some that I think are the best:
1.
Whether they were lounging at the Central Perk cafe or chatting in Monica’s apartment, the Friends group were absolute friend goals. Sure, they had their fair share of fights, breakups, and some interesting romantic endeavours (Rachel and Joey, I’m looking at you). But at the end of the day, they always had each other’s backs. They’re all friends, but they’re the kind of group that feels like family.
2.
From playing Dungeons & Dragons to fighting off supernatural monsters, the kids from Stranger Things were friends like no other. They were extremely loyal, brave, and willing to risk their lives for each other. Even after going through several rounds of dangerous monsters and growing up together, this crew is some of the most mature in this list.
3.
The loft mates in New Girl were messy, quirky, and always ridiculous, but their love for one another was undeniable. Schmidt’s dramatics, Winston’s chaos, Nick’s cynicism, and Jess’ constant positivity somehow balanced into a beautifully endearing squad. They even created an extremely intricate drinking game together. That’s goals right there.
4.
Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha had one of the strongest bonds in TV. They bonded over their shared love (and hatred) of men, and always looked out for one another. Their bond almost felt more like sisters, and that’s the best kind of friendship you can have.
5.
The Pogues from Outer Banks are proof that loyalty runs deep, no matter how chaotic life gets. From treasure hunts to running from the police, these teens showed how to be ride-or-die friends for each other.
6.
Chaotic, loud, and endlessly funny — the Derry Girls group were friendship perfection. They always landed themselves in the most absurd of situations and bickered nonstop, but their bond was unquestionable. Honestly, you’d never be bored hanging out with friends like them.
7.
Despite Ted’s long-winded stories and Barney’s questionable antics, the MacLaren’s gang from How I Met Your Mother truly cared for each other. They celebrated their milestones together, leaned on one another throughout heartbreaks, and basically lived at that bar booth — seriously, how often were they drinking and eating bar food? In many ways, they were the modern Friends group.
And now, here are some that I think are the worst:
8.
These five from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are the definition of toxic friends. They manipulated, backstabbed, and sabotaged each other at every possible moment. They’re super fun to watch from a distance, but would be a terrible situation to join IRL.
9.
If the crew from Riverdale weren’t solving murders, they were joining cults or forming street gangs…Yes, I mean that literally. There was never a moment of peace for this group, and way too many betrayals to count. The Riverdale teens weren’t a friend group: they were a disaster hanging on by a thread.
10.
The Seinfeld gang were all hilarious, and all terrible people. Every friendship moment came with selfishness, petty fights, or sabotaging. This friend group would’ve fallen apart before it could even start if they were real pals.
11.
The girls from Pretty Little Liars had a friendship based on lies, secrets, and blackmail. It’s surprising they stuck together in the first place, but it’s mostly because they were being terrorized by “A.” The paranoia would’ve destroyed them in weeks, not years. And honestly? Half of them would’ve just moved away…
12.
The Girls friends were brutally honest, but also just brutally mean. Every conversation ended in judgement, resentment, or passive aggression. It’s no wonder why Shoshanna told the rest of them that their friendship wouldn’t work. They all hated each other.
13.
Ryan, Seth, Summer, and Marisa from The O.C looked like a dream team from the start, but their melodrama and constant love triangles would make anyone want to tap out. Every hangout was overshadowed by a crisis, and endless selfishness.
14.
Watching The Big Bang Theory gang is fun, but hanging out with them? That would be unbearable. Sheldon’s strict rules and the group’s constant arguing would make friendship feel more like hard work.
Whether it’s a casual hangout with the Sex and the City gals or an argument with the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia — These groups prove that TV friendships can be fun to watch, but aren’t always exactly healthy.
Which of these TV friend groups would you actually want to join IRL, and which of them would you avoid like the plague? Let us know in the comments!
