Baby Killed and 5-Year-Old Injured After Being Crushed Between Cars

An infant has died, and another child was seriously injured after they were crushed between two cars in a shopping mall parking lot in Australia.

The incident occurred along Brookfield Road in Minto around 3:30 p.m. local time on Monday, Sept. 15, according to New South Wales Police.

Police responded to the scene and learned that a 5-month-old infant and a 5-year-old child were hit by a car.

The woman behind the wheel of the car involved in the crash lost control and struck the baby’s carriage with the back of the vehicle, 7News Australia reported. The two children were crushed between the SUV and another car.

CPR was performed on the infant, but she died at the scene, according to police. The 5-year-old child was transported to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in a serious condition.

The 35-year-old woman who was behind the wheel of the car involved in the crash “was uninjured,” police said.

Footage of the scene shared by 7News showed the car over the break line and in close proximity to another vehicle, with debris on the ground and a shopping cart nearby.

“All I saw was the paramedics, I think four ambulances, a heap of police cars attending to the scene,” said a witness who was at Minto Mall at the time of the crash, Australia’s ABC News reported.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing, police said.

Investigators are looking into whether the driver may have accidentally put the car in reverse, according to the reports.
