In a once in a lifetime opportunity, you could have ownership of your very own island for an entire year, offering a peaceful oasis among some of the most breathtaking scenery

Ever dreamt of having your own private island? Where you can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, listen to the gentle lapping of waves against your shore, stroll along the sandy banks at sunset and soak up the untouched landscapes in an undeniable freedom. Well, now you can.

In a rare opportunity, Visit Sweden is giving away five of their private islands for an entire year to UK travellers. That means you’d get full access to your very own island, away from crowds and holiday hotspots, for 365 days during a custodianship, and given the official title of ‘Island Custodian’.

The country is renowned for its collection of more than 267,000 islands, nestled among the serene surroundings, and one could be yours. There are five beautiful and untouched islands up for grabs in the Scandinavian nation, and all you have to do is share a video of yourself explaining why you believe you deserve your own Swedish island.

However, there’s a catch for anyone tempted by the competition, as you’ll be responsible for the island during the ownership. That means that in between lapping up the views and soaking up the rays in summer, you’ll just need to ensure you look after the secluded oasis.

“Sweden has more islands than any other country in the world, and we would like to invite people to enjoy what may be the most genuine form of luxury: the peace and tranquillity of nature on your own island,” Susanne Andersson, CEO at Visit Sweden, said.

This exciting opportunity has been launched by Visit Sweden in partnership with the National Property Board, which manages state-owned cultural heritage properties. They stated that the five islands available are “wonderfully secluded”, but are all near a “local community for essentials”, so you’ll have everything you need during the once-in-a-lifetime escape.

Outlining what’s included, Visit Sweden said:

  • A one-year right to use one of the five selected islands
  • A diploma certifying the winner as the official island custodian
  • A trip to Sweden
  • A contract outlining basic stewardship responsibilities

One of the islands available is Medbadan, which Visit Sweden said was “shaped by the last ice age”, where visitors can enjoy the “brackish water, go for a swim or a gentle paddle among the skerries.” Storberget is another remote island up for grabs, which has been “shaped by the open sea” and called “The big mountain”.

Elsewhere, there is the woodland island of Tjuvholmen, with “lighter patches of birch and alder closer to the water” and a tranquil haven where you can listen to the gulls and sea eagles. Marsten is the ideal island for those who love fishing, with clear waters, while there’s the nearby beach of Skrea strand for a more lively atmosphere.

Susanne added: “If you don’t get one of these islands, don’t worry. Sweden has many more that everyone can enjoy. From quiet lakes to open coastlines, there’s an island paradise waiting for one and all.”

Applications are now open, and you have until April 17, 2026, to apply. For more information and what to include in your submission video, visit the Visit Sweden website.
