We hope and expect that, by default, our parents will have our best interests at heart. But, sometimes our family is the one we choose—or those who choose us. Those people who actually show up for us can become closer to us and treat us better than our original family ever did.
When this teen’s father remarried when she was 14 years old, her new stepmother proved to be a true cartoon villain. She was cold, suspicious, and untrusting, saving any warmth she might have had for her own children while keeping the teen at an arm’s length. But, while she was distant, she was never cruel, only going as far as to make her feel unwelcome through the unspoken implication of her behavior. This all changed when the cracks began to show in the stepmother’s relationship with the teen’s father. Suddenly, she was kind and warm, confessing that the teen’s own father had made sure to put a wedge between the teen and her when they had first married.
While one has to wonder at this point in the story whether or not the stepmother was just trying to turn her against her father, the father’s past actions and his ensuing reaction when she decided to live with her stepmother instead of him lend credence to the claims.
